a note: on ships that are "sweet", or "why is this page marked 18+?"

what do i count as sweet? i don't really know either. i just wanted a cute naming convention for my pages.
the long answer: it's honestly very difficult to categorize ships. i have many ships that are, at a glance, very palatable and normal and, well, "sweet." but the way i ship them can twist that – angsty and one-sided, toxic, horny, etc. i don't want all the ships on this page to end up together. i don't want them all to treat each other right.
when i was designing my site, i knew i wanted to keep my love for transgressive media separate, because i wanted people who are squicked out by that stuff to be able to explore my vault too – hence the existence of the spicy page! but it's been difficult to say where exactly to draw the line. for example:
- if i ship kevin + edd from ed, edd, n eddy, should they be deemed "spicy" because they're kids?
- if i ship pearl + rose from steven universe but love the power imbalance and that pearl just suffers through it all, should they be deemed "spicy" because it's "toxic"?
- if i ship gerri + roman from succession, where the nature of their relationship IS horny and weird and there's an age gap involved, should they be deemed "spicy" for all the reasons mentioned even if they're two consenting adults?
ultimately, everyone has differing ideas on what is skeevy and what is not.
i knew i, personally, would feel ridiculous grouping some of these in with all my more explicitly taboo faves. two kids developing a silly cute relationship, a knight having a doomed crush on her liege, and grown ass adults who have kinky non-sex (and also sometimes sex, in some fics) are not really what i think of as particularly transgressive – just fun, interesting ships. if i got rid of every ship that i did not think of in the way of "they only fuck after turning 18, then get married and have a normal married life," this would be the saddest page ever.
this is not to say i don't have "vanilla" ships where i do see them married, 2.5 kids, white picket fence, the whole shebang. (okay, ben wyatt and leslie knope have 3 kids, but i digress.) i also don't mean to say those ships are not able to be fun and interesting. they totally are! but i felt the need to explain why this page has more than just that.
so you can think of the range of these ships/tropes as anything from "sweet and wholesome and healthy" to "maybe freaky and alarming, but not something that would be legally fucked up IF they were real people and not fictional characters" (which would be on the other page).

ship dynamics and shippy narrative tropes i love
- i mostly ship HL, but i'm very particular about what kind of HL... sorry i cannot describe it.
- i LOVE friends to lovers. even when i like enemies to lovers, i usually like them as enemies to friends to lovers.
- childhood friends, but only if there's a little bit of spice to it
- ensemble → pair: not a solid pair in the beginning, but over time start to like each other
- hodgepodge to lovers: when they've been literally everything to each other and THEN they get together (or re-get together)
- crushes/pining
- girl yuri
- boy yuri
- one-sided or imbalanced devotion
- one-sided animosity!
- then the other person is either like “uhhh ok” or “NO PLS LIKE ME!!!!!”
- dynamics where characters are playful with each other and banter well
- "arguing while holding hands" vibes
- bad social skills guy x well-liked girl - i enjoy most variations, but specifically love:
- shy boy x friendly girl
- abrasive boy x sweet girl
- good girl x bad boy
- girl who is like “you’re trouble” x guy who is like “hehe” but could actually treat her right if she gave him a shot
- or when they get together it’s like “me and my pet rat” kind of vibes

- ships where charas act different from their usual selves around each other specifically, but not with other people
- e.g. A who is abrasive usually is sweeter around their crush B, or B who is usually very kind and accommodating is a little less patient with A
- hurt/comfort, trauma unpacking, stuff like that!!
- jealousy, insecurity, miscommunication, paired with lots of talking, reassurance, etc.
- anything that messes with time. younger A interacting with older B, timeloops, immortal x mortal, etc.

- secret relationships
- domesticity! i guess one would call it "domestic fluff" but... i love when there's tiny problems too. i love the mundaneity. maybe that's still fluff. slice of life?

- this is SPECIFICALLY fire emblemmy, but i love epistolary / historical document-type depictions of them... as if they were real people being written about by scholars.. people saved stuff by them... ough
tropes i don't love...
- HL where the guy is suave and confident and the girl just blushes and/or cries lol
- "package deal" type ships: like when they come as a set prepared for you by the canon, or it's "obvious" they are designed to be shipped together. i don't care
- gender swaps/bends, body swaps, etc
- soulmate AUs
- when both halves are too similar in demeanor (both sweet and polite, both smug bastards, etc)
- flirty/playful x tsundere/angry with them
- ships that are ATG (any two guys) or just the two hottest guys in the franchise paired up
- kidfics, when drawn out too long
- enemies to lovers (i prefer it onesided!)
- "all our friends have to intervene and help us get together and basically sustain our relationship"
- when the way they are around each other is the same as how they are around other people
