main

front page inspired by goblin-heart's library.

i've always loved reading! i fell off it a little bit in college — i think being required to read books killed my drive to read – but have since come back to it. i love that it's a nice little way for me to turn my brain off and really dive into with intention – which is something i can cheat when it comes to movies or shows lol.

i don't know many other people who read and like the same titles i do, and i'm the worst at taking book recs, so this page says more about me than any other media library on here because most of my selection is handpicked (rather than consumed because my loved ones were talking about it). whether it says something positive or negative is really for anyone to judge i suppose, but either way, it's me!

i usually keep track of my books on The Storygraph, but i wanted a page on my site dedicated to some of my faves.

i have completed 14 out of 30 books this year.

currently reading

* indicates a reread.

  • lolita, vladimir nabokov
  • one day*, david nicholls
  • kinky history, esmé louise james
  • the lonely hunter*, aimeé lutkin
  • the diary of a bookseller, shaun bythell

preferences

of course, there are always exceptions :)

stuff i typically like

  • realistic fiction
  • "unlikeable" characters who do things most people would not
  • snappy, straightforward prose
  • disturbing, complicated, or dysfunctional relationships - more often sexual, familial, platonic, situational, etc. than romantic
  • a little bit of gothic / horror
    • i need to push myself out of my comfort zone sometimes!
  • autobiography/memoir especially about family, gender, culture, belonging, &c.
  • some history!
  • stories with female main characters
  • books that mess with time – skipping through periods, time-traveling characters, etc.
  • contemporary essays, usually with some humor
  • standalone titles

stuff i tend to avoid

  • fantasy, sci-fi, and sometimes even stuff set in very rural locations – anything too far removed from what is familiar
    • i'm character-driven, not world-driven
  • flowery prose and long, vivid descriptions
  • young adult
  • booktok-type romance
  • pretty art, mediocre writing (GNs)
  • "oh no this person is missing, and in the process of trying to find them we've found out they are not who they seem"
  • surrealist fiction
  • romance where one of them dies at the end.
  • tacky, corporate, or highly ornate book covers (sorry i Do judge a book by its cover...)
  • series

book habits

  • i read physical books more: i like to write in them, i like having them on my shelf, and i like not looking at a screen. sometimes i'll buy an e-book if i really can't find the book i want, but i really dislike reading off of PDFs.
  • i read multiple books at once: scroll up to see what i'm currently reading.
  • i bookmark however the hell i decide in the moment: dog-ear, receipt, actual bookmark. i'm not very precious about my books...
  • i usually buy books while traveling: i just think the selection is usually better.
  • i write in my books: i try to put annotations in pencil, but i highlight anyway, which kind of defeats the purpose of using a pencil, so sometimes i use pen anyway. if the paper is darker, ink is better.
  • i'm picky about margins: see previous bullet for the reason.

english language webcomics

check please! (2013~2020) by ngozi ukazu

  • college, sports, romance (BL)
  • completed
  • read here!

i read this in high school, i think! i'm not much of a sports person and didn't know anything about hockey but was enthralled by the world in this comic and all the SLANG. super cute characters, super cute romance. i'm not caught up, but i'm putting it here anyway because it's one of the few webcomics i was dedicated to.

🌟 devil's candy (2014~present) by rem & bikkuri

  • fantasy, school setting, really amazing world
  • ongoing
  • read here!

my sister's been following rem's work since vampire kisses and she put me onto devil's candy when rem revived it! it was very easy to fall in love with the world rem and bikkuri created, even as a person who generally doesn't like fantasy... it's the kind of anime-flavor fantasy that is not hard to learn, yet still very clearly well thought-out!

rem's chara designs are also sooo cutieful and everyone has so much personality... i'm floored by how much i like all the characters tbh, as i usually dislike / don't care about at least a few in an ensemble cast, but i love everyone. (it's also impressive how well-drawn they all are no matter how varied in appearance!)

my favorite characters are yahgie and tremolo, and i have a soft spot for clarence. (especially after chapter 15 - jesus christ) but everyone is so cute and likeable... raaah

hard lacquer (2018~?) by amelia allore

  • crime, glamour, lesbians
  • ongoing, but maybe on hiatus?
  • read here!

i love mimiadraws' style, comic sensibilities, and colors soooo much. hard lacquer is a visual feast. claire is sooo pretty and PETRA IS SO. RAAAH... the misc drawings amelia does of her characters makes you want to get to know em!!

matchmaker (2021~2023) by cam marshall

  • romance, silly, love in da time of quarantine
  • complete
  • read here

super cute comic i read on twitter. it's sweet wholesome fun with a lovable queer cast! the characters are cartoony but still feel like people i might know, which warms my heart.

stick n poke (2019?~present) by tobi & max

  • americana, romance, gay as hell
  • ongoing
  • read on webtoon or tapas!

i clicked on this while casually scrolling through tapas trying to find more webcomics for my measly webcomic section on this site and hit the jackpot. the comic is so american and so gay, and that heavyhandedness can be a deterrent in some other stories, but here it feels like it fits perfectly.

the two creators swap out writing and drawing each chapter and they've put together a cast of people who feel real and are lovable even when they're not. everything about the comic - characters, art style, expressiveness, storytelling - gets better and better as you continue to read.

my favorite characters are casper, blue, and winnie, but guh i love everyone.

todd allison & the petunia violet (2014~2015) by nozmo

  • historical, funny, mystery?
  • discontinued
  • read here!

this was THE webcomic for me. i was so enamored by the art style and the comedic timing... i think a lot of my comic-making sensibilities can find their roots in tapv, i loved it that much lol. the setting (early 20th century melbourne!) is super fun, and while i could probably not tell you what the story is about now – i'd have to reread it – i just remember it being a good enough time for me to share with all my friends.

to this day i follow nozmo's work very enthusiastically and love the comics they've come out with since. their stories are always so energetic and their characters are lots of fun!!

my favorite characters were cyril and elijah, and i also loved petunia lots.

what happens next (2021~present) by maximum graves

  • horror, drama, extremely internet
  • ongoing
  • read here!

really impressed by this comic and how it captures a very specific corner of the internet... like the shit that goes on feels like the kind of thing you probably could have really seen happening on tumblr back in the 2010s, down to the character personalities and everything.

i don't know if non-chronically online people could read this and understand, but to the people who knew and were there, this is so visceral. great storytelling!!

manga (oneshots/short)

akuma ni itsukushimi no te wo

  • romance (HL) oneshot
  • immortal demon sexyman x mortal pianist girl

the demon's kind of pathetic, which is really the main draw here. he is the blueprint for every immortal oc i've ever made, so i can't not put this manga on this list.

dusk, orange, the blooming flowers

  • romance (GL) oneshot
  • unrequited... angst!

the pining girl reminded me of a girl i had a crush on in high school so i latched onto this oneshot like nobody's business.

handsome girl and sheltered girl

  • romance (GL), shenanigans
  • sheltered girl is extremely sillay

oh i was very in love with handsome girl, this was just cute and fluffy... she also reminded me of yuri von fire emblem so LMAO

hanjuku joshi

  • romance (GL), there is sex btw
  • sweet and smutty

one of my first yuri mangas as a gay teen... i too was a booby girl dating a more boyish girl :) the couple is sugary sweet, and the art style is so soft that even the porn is cute.

🌟 look back

  • AUGH....... (oneshot)
  • friendship! the passage of time! what could have been! the bonding experience of making art together!

this just hurt me so much, and made me think about all the art friends i had growing up. awoo...

🌟 mahou ga tsukaenakutemo

  • drama, slice of life, supernatural - at least according to the mangadex tags
  • more than a dash of queer cuteness (see the image attached to this description!)

loved the art and the storytelling. i feel like this is the manga version of short literary fiction. i also loved ookawa and loved that they and the girl who rejected kishi were happy together... so so cute...

🌟 mud

  • romance (HL) oneshot, kinky themes ahead
  • student finds out her teacher is a sub

i think i read this in high school but looking back i'm amazed at 1) how me-catered this manga was LOL i just happened to find it? and 2) how... good it is? that ending always gets me.

my solo exchange diary

  • autobiography, mental illness, adulthood, being a lesbian
  • by nagata kabi of "my lesbian experience with loneliness" fame

i've not done a great job of keeping up with nagata kabi's more recent works but i really liked my solo exchange diary - loved the structure of it (i am a sucker for talking to one's past or future self) and i just like her way of explaining things.

prism

  • romance (GL), there is sex if i'm remembering correctly
  • girl finds out her childhood crush was actually a girl, continues to have a crush on her anyway

a manga i read as a baby gay that made me happy to read... i just had a big yuri phase in high school lol. i don't remember it much but it was formative so it goes here!

toshishita no otoko no ko

  • romance (HL), younger guy
  • it teases at a potential love triangle with the guy's older brother but ultimately is not stressful (<- girl who hates love triangles lol)

as a younger guy truther i thought this was a really cute popcorn read... both the younger brother and older brother are very handsome. i love the femC's younger brothers too.

🌟 unicorns aren't horny!

  • uhhh... slice of life with fantasy elements? kind of a romance between her and the unicorn too, or something close to romance
  • the star rec is for weirdos (positive) only, everyone normal should probably scroll past (and also not be on my site)

virgin femC lives with a unicorn, who loves that she's a virgin lmao. this is the kind of shit i want to make... extremely cute, simply drawn, indulgent, and truly not for everyone.

manga (series)

azumanga daioh

  • comedy, slice of life, school setting, all girls i think
  • i love a girls being girls kind of manga... they're so silly...

i used to have a collection of pixel reacts of "chiyo-chan's dad" ... love this manga sm

🌟 bakuman

  • unsure how to categorize this. two high school guys team up to make manga
  • a nice look into the manga industry!

read this first when i was in 4th grade if i'm not mistaken! i thought it was really well drawn and a lot of fun, and i learned a lot about manga through it. i should pick it up again...

choco mimi

  • slice of life, shoujo?, some romance elements but mostly goofing off
  • impossible to find complete online for some reason

my sister collected copies of this manga. such a cute style, and honestly very funny LOL all the characters were lovable. mumu my shota king. i wish we could find the last few volumes to complete our collection...

gokushufudou / way of the house husband

  • really mostly comedy
  • yakuza guy is now a house husband

i love the shenanigans tatsu gets up to and how much he loves his wife

🌟 gekkan shoujo nozaki-kun

  • comedy, slice of life?, school setting, about manga but also mostly shenanigans
  • girl confesses to her stoic, tall crush who thinks she's a fan of his very popular shoujo manga

I LOVE MIKORIN... I LOVE KASHIMA... i love all the characters. this is such a funny manga. i started with the anime but the manga has so much more, and the comedic timing is somehow better in panels. highly recommend.

🌟 haikyuu!!

  • my one and only sports manga/anime (free! doesn't count)
  • never have i been more satisfied with a timeskip

very very good, and fast-paced without rushing (fast-paced media my beloved!). i started with the anime and then continued with the manga after s3, because s4 wasn't out yet. was really impressed by how easy it was to follow the vball games in comics, lol.

i managed to catch up in time for the official english release of the final chapter and i can't describe the fulfillment of completing this story along with everyone else reading it...! if you choose to start now it will still be fulfilling i promise you.

my favorite boys are noya, lev, and kunimi. my favorite characters are hinata, kenma, and oikawa (against my will - brazil changed me).

hirunaka no ryuusei

  • shoujo, romance (HL), love triangle
  • country gal moves to the city, shenanigans ensue

pretty classic shoujo romance with all the elements (unattainable crush, the romance that comes to be, bitchy-in-the-beginning rival girl, etc). very pretty art style, and suzume is lovable.

i have no issue with teacher/student pairings but i found myself rooting for mamura from the start! he's super cute.

🌟 hourou musuko / wandering son

  • very lovingly drawn manga about queer kids
  • don't know how to describe it - just really sweetly told, with lots of different perspectives

for some reason i found this as a wee youth (age 10), and i remember really loving it wholeheartedly. i didn't realize its quality would keep so well in my adult eyes – it's really well done and still very relevant. a quiet, compelling manga about gender and adolescence.

ichigo mashimaro

  • humor, slice of life
  • another silly girls-being-girls manga where they are just funny and cute

borrowed this from my sister. i think most of the manga i read about funny girls was recommended by her LOL.

🌟 kimi wa pet

  • romance (HL)
  • careerwoman has a pet boy (he lives at her place and gets to eat)

sounds tropey, but very sincere and treats the characters seriously. i particularly like how they handled the love rivals, and how the relationship between the two MCs developed over time. them being adults in a relationship as equals felt believable, despite their beginnings.

seriously, i still think about this manga all the time... no one is doing it like them!!!

🌟 the guy she was interested in wasn't a guy at all

  • romance (GL) raaahhhh i'm so insane about them!!!
  • gyaru-type likes music that does not fit her aesthetic. she has a crush on the boy at her local music shop, who turns out to be her girl classmate

they are so so cute and the art for this manga is so good. i usually call it the "lime yuri" manga bc the color the mangaka uses is a bright lime green. koga-san reminds me a lot of one of my friends, so i'm particularly endeared by her

magical pokemon journey

  • this manga is so deeply unserious i love it so much
  • non-canon pokemon trainers (named after different kinds of nuts) able to talk with their pokemon

if anyone has volumes 9 & 10 of this manga please sell them to me. i loved how many stories focused on the pokemon characters (vs the humans) and their personalities & adventures... arbok having a crush on wigglytuff is so special to me

my androgynous boyfriend

  • romance (HL), silly
  • very plain girl working in publishing (?) has a bishie boyfriend

good lighthearted fun! it's cute how much meguru and wako love each other.

🌟 our precious conversations

  • romance (HL), high school, slice of life, lotsss of talking (see title)
  • pretty girl has a crush on guy and unwittingly befriends him because he cannot fathom her liking him lol

i'm a gemini venus so i love a relationship with lots of talking lol. the main guy and girl learn a lot from each other's perspectives, and learn a lot about each other as well... it feels very real and organic to see their relationship develop

the side characters are also cute. hamarin is me. caffeine is super cute... any tension that occurs doesn't get drawn out (hard to miscommunicate when all they do is talk) so it's very feel good, but also v full!

a side character's love story

  • romance (HL)
  • a no-frills, sweet shoujo about a wallflower-ish girl and her equally unremarkable coworker crush

just really quiet and sweet. no drama (since they're "side characters"!) but still very heart-fluttering

🌟 sweat and soap

  • romance (HL), office setting
  • asako sweats a lot and works in accounting for a soap company, where she meets kotaro who works in product devt and likes how she smells LOL

sounds pervy and there are eventual sexual themes, but this manga is honestly very wholesome and cute, all the sniffing aside!!

they communicate well and it's nice to see them move through the stages of their relationship. also bonus points for asako's younger brother's slight siscon

saint young men

  • comedy!
  • jesus and buddha are roommates and they live in japan

this is another deeply unserious manga lol. i also read this when i was 10... i should reread it, it's too funny

korean webtoons

i love amy

  • romance (GL), kind of fucked up themes too
  • bibi uses amy to get closer to her crush peter, but their relationship evolves

the art is so cute for something with a kind of disturbed protag LOL. i like the contrast between unhinged bibi and sad wet cat amy... i didn't get to read this in full but want to

sexercise

  • obviously smut - it's about a gym where you work out by having sex
  • lots of little subplots with different romantic (HL) dynamics

don't laugh, it's genuinely a fun read! i was honestly surprised by how invested i got in the stories LOL i liked the different relationships (glasses boy and plump girl my faves) and felt very fulfilled by each character's ending.

the stories of those around me

  • romance (HL), slice of life
  • a very "this is you as an adult" kind of comic - not full of adventure, but exciting in its own right

revolves around a girl friend group and their different issues and lives. very sweet and reflective, and even funny!

yes, my boss!

  • romance (HL), office setting
  • webtoon artist's boss sucks, but he's a huge fan of her comics and applies to be HER assistant too

i love a silly situation. it was funny to see them navigate the opposite dynamics they have in their two workplaces and grow to care about each other. i mostly read this for the pathetic boss
